Don’t walk

We have probably seen that strikeouts are up recently. However, let’s see something different. Walk (Base on balls). Giving up free passes is definitely not a good idea in baseball and some pitchers certainly don’t issue walks easily.

Zach Eflin made 11 starts so far and he only gave up 8 walks in 68 innings. His walk rate per 9 innings is only 1.06. A low walk rate doesn’t guarantee the dominance of a pitcher. Eflin gave up 73 hits and opponents hit .272 against him. However, the dominance of Gerrit Cole is without doubt. Gerrit Cole just set a new record in May, throwing 61 strikeouts before issuing a walk. Cole only gave up 9 walks so far and he has 97 strikeouts in 70.2 innings. Additionally, Julio Urias made 11 starts so far and issued only 9 walks as well. His BB/9 is currently 1.20 and he posts a 0.95 WHIP. Last season, Urias’ BB/9 was 2.95 and he gave up 18 walks in 11 games. It’s even harder to see Urias give up free passes this season. Hyun Jin Ryu doesn’t like to give up free passes, either. Ryu only issued 8 walks in 58.1 innings. Ryu’s walk rate per 9 innings was 1.18 in 2019. Let’s see whether Ryu will set a new record this season. Moreover, batters really have no clue against Jacob deGrom. He missed some time because he was placed on the IL. Nonetheless, a healthy deGrom is phenomenal. By far, he made 8 starts and only gave up 7 walks. Besides, deGrom already threw 82 strikeouts in 51 innings.

Justin Verlander

Miles Mikolas only pitched one game so far this season, furthermore, he and Mike Leake didn’t pitch last season. But, looking back to their performance, it’s rare to see them issue walks. It seems that Ryu really doesn’t like to give up free passes. In the last three seasons, he threw 332 innings, while issuing 56 free passes. It’s Greinke’s 18th season in the majors. His career BB/9 is 2.06 and in each of the last three seasons, he has a below 2 BB/9. Verlander’s walk rate per 9 innings was 1.63 in the last three seasons. However, there’s something interesting. His BB/9 was 2.75 in his 13 seasons with the Tigers. His BB/9 after coming to Houston is only 1.60. Maybe his control is even better after joining the Astros?

Well, who has the lowest walk rate per 9 innings among active players? The answer is Josh Tomlin. His BB/9 is 1.32. Meanwhile, Jordan Zimmermann, who just announced his retirement from Major League Baseball, gave up 1.93 walks per 9 innings in his career. In his 7 seasons with the Nationals, he was one of the dominant pitchers in the majors and his BB/9 was 1.82. Nevertheless, after signing with the Detroit Tigers, he couldn’t perform as well as he did. His BB/9 rose to 2.15 and his WHIP increased from 1.16 to 1.44. Moreover, Kyle Hendricks had a pretty good 2020. He made 12 starts last season and gave up only 8 walks. By far this season, Hendricks made 11 starts and he already issued 11 walks. His BB/9 was only 0.89 last year and it goes up to 1.59 this season. Well, Hendricks still doesn’t give up many free passes easily, but it might be hard to replicate his performance in the 2020 season.
