By far, the Los Angeles Dodgers already lost 12 extra inning games and the Rays lost 11 times in extra innings. The Dodgers only hit .225 in extra innings this season and the Rays hit just .172. However, some teams are much better at hitting in extra innings.
The New York Mets won 8 extra inning games and lost 5 times. In extra inning games, the Mets have a .371 batting average with 3 home runs and 23 RBI. The Mets are fine at hitting in extra inning games, however, a big problem is that they are 7.5 games behind the Braves, which currently lead the NL East.
Another team in the NL East is also hitting well in extra inning games. The Phillies own a batting average of .357 with 3 home runs and 22 RBI over 15 extra inning games and they won 9 of those 15 games.
The Boston Red Sox won 9 of 13 extra inning games. They post a batting average of .343 with 3 homers and 24 RBI in the extra innings. Back in 2020, the Red Sox only batted .136 in extra innings and didn’t win any extra inning games.
The Oakland Athletics already won 7 extra inning games while losing 3 times. They have been hitting well in extra innings with a batting average of .333.
Moreover, the Reds and the Mariners each post a .325 BA in extra innings. The Reds won 8 of 15 extra inning games. The Mariners seem to be pretty good at playing extra inning games since they won 12 of 17 extra innings.
Now, let’s look at some teams which have problems with hitting in extra innings.
The Indians are hitting .200 in extra innings and they won 6 of 9 extra inning games.
The Tampa Bay Rays are hitting .172 in extra innings this season and they only won 5 extra inning games while losing 11 times. Last season, they were hitting well with a .286 BA and won 4 out of 7 extra inning games.
Moreover, on August 25, the Dodgers defeated the Padres in 16 innings and the game is the longest MLB game since the implementation of runner-on-second rule. These two teams definitely don’t like extra inning games. The Dodgers only won 4 times in extra inning games and lost 12 times. The Padres are just hitting .169 in extra innings and they lost 6 out of 13 extra inning games. Looking back at the shortened 2020 season, the Dodgers won 5 extra inning games and lost only one. The Padres won all 4 extra inning games last year. Things are probably at the wrong end in extra innings for these two teams in 2021.
In addition, the Royals, the Braves, the Blue Jays and the Orioles each just won 3 times in extra inning games. As we can see, hitting is probably a big problem for those teams. In particular, the Blue Jays already lost 9 times in extra innings this season and they are only batting .158 with 10 RBI in extra innings. With Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (91 RBI), Teoscar Hernandez (84 RBI), Bo Bichette (80 RBI), Marcus Semien (77 RBI) and Randal Grichuk (76 RBI) in the lineup, it’s hard to imagine that the Blue Jays only collected 10 RBI in extra innings.
The Dodgers and the Rays each have won more than 80 games so far, nonetheless, they each lost more than 10 times in extra innings. Being unable to hit well in extra innings is truly a problem. Furthermore, losing too many extra inning games might cause the Blue Jays and the Padres to lose playoff spots.
