The New York Mets introduced Buck Showalter, who won Manager of the Year three times, as the new manager. I was quite interested in his managerial record and went to check on the great baseball reference website. In his managerial career, he has already led four teams and won more than 1500 games. However, another stat truly drew my interest. Showalter has managed more than 3000 games over 20 seasons and he was ejected 33 times. And, I was just thinking which manager was thrown out of the most games in 2021?
Jayce Tingler finished 2nd in the 2020 NL Manager of the Year voting. Nonetheless, he and the Padres had a very disappointing 2021 season. The Padres won 79 games in 2021 and didn’t clinch a postseason berth. Tingler was dismissed by the Padres after the 2021 season. During the regular season, he was ejected 7 times, most in the 2021 season.
Well, Jayce Tingler will not be the Padres skipper in 2022. Bob Melvin left the Oakland Athletics to be the new Padres manager. Bob Melvin had been the A’s manager over the last 11 seasons and he led the A’s to win the AL West title three times. Last season, the Oakland Athletics had a record of 86-76 and Bob Melvin was thrown out 6 times.
Additionally, the Yankees manager Aaron Boone was ejected 6 times in the 2021 season as well. Aaron Boone has been the Yankees manager for 4 years and during these 4 seasons, the Yankees posted an over .600 winning percentage, which isn’t bad. However, managing the Yankees is never an easy job. Over the last 4 seasons, the Yankees only won the AL East title once and the Yankees fans are still waiting for the first World Series title since 2009.
Moreover, 4 managers each were thrown out 5 times in 2021. Among those 4 managers, two were the 2021 NL Manager of the Year finalists. Furthermore, the Cubs skipper David Ross and the Phillies Manager Joe Girardi each were ejected 4 times last season.
Finally, among active managers, Tony La Russa has managed more than 5000 games and lifted the Commissioner’s trophy three times. La Russa has been thrown out 91 times so far in his managerial career. Moreover, Joe Maddon has 18 years of managing experience so far and, the most unforgettable moment was that, in 2016, he led the Chicago Cubs to end the 108-year World Series drought. Maddon has managed more than 2500 games and by far, he was ejected 58 times. Additionally, Bob Melvin was thrown out 50 times in his managerial career so far.
It’s not common to see a manager be thrown out of a game. Ejection normally happened after a heated argument with an umpire. Sometimes, an ejection may be followed by a fine or a suspension. For some fans, watching a manager be thrown out of a game is very entertaining, in particular, they love to see the opponents’ manager be ejected. Furthermore, many fans might still remember that Bobby Valentine, former manager of the New York Mets, was ejected during a game against the Blue Jays and he returned to the dugout with a disguise.
