A few weeks ago, I was browsing on Instagram and tried to see if there’s something interesting. And, I saw a video that Manny Ramirez in the Dodgers uniform crushed a home run. While seeing Manny Ramirez with the Dodgers jersey, I was just thinking about the 3-team trade that sent Manny to the Dodgers. Is it a win-win trade for all three teams?
First of all, let’s see the three-team trade that happened on July 31, 2008.
The Dodgers sent Andy LaRoche and Bryan Morris to the Pirates and acquired Manny Ramirez from the Red Sox. In total, Manny Ramirez played 3 seasons for the Dodgers, he slashed .322/.433/.580 with 44 home runs and 156 RBI over 223 games. However, Manny was suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs in 2009. But, it’s hard to ignore Manny’s performance in the playoffs. In 2008, Manny was hitting .520/.667/1.080 with 4 home runs and 10 RBI in the playoffs. He was definitely the most productive hitter in the Dodgers lineup in the 2008 postseason. In the 2009 postseason, Manny was batting .281/.324/.469 with 1 home run and 4 RBI over 8 games.
Moreover, the Red Sox got Jason Bay from the Pirates. At the same time, they sent Manny to the Dodgers and sent Craig Hansen and Brandon Moss to the Pirates. Jason Bay played 200 games for the Red Sox in 2008 and 2009, slashing .274/.380/.534 with 45 home runs and 156 RBI. Additionally, Bay hit .341/.471/.634 with 3 home runs and 9 RBI in the 2008 postseason. However, he only had 1 hit over 3 games in the 2009 playoffs.
Finally, the Pirates got 4 players in this 3-team trade. They acquired Andy LaRoche and Bryan Morris from the Dodgers. And LaRoche played for the Pirates from 2008 to 2010. Over these three seasons, he batted .226/.296/.341 with 19 home runs and 92 RBI over 301 games. Furthermore, Bryan Morris was a prospect during the trade and he made his MLB debut in 2012. In total, Morris pitched 3 seasons for the Pirates and posted a 3.46 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP over 93.2 innings. At the same time, the Red Sox sent Craig Hansen and Brandon Moss to the Pirates. Craig Hansen tossed 22 innings for the Pirates in 2008 and 2009, posting a 6.95 ERA and a 1.86 WHIP. In addition, Brandon Moss played 195 games for the Pirates from 2008 to 2010. Moss hit .228/.295/.373 with 13 home runs and 66 RBI over these three years.
When reviewing this blockbuster trade, Manny Ramirez played 223 games for the Dodgers from 2008 to 2010 and Jason Bay played 200 games for the Red Sox between 2008 and 2009. It’s quite interesting that Bay collected 156 RBI in the Red Sox uniform and Manny had 156 RBI in the Dodgers jersey as well. Jason Bay demonstrated that he could hit in the AL and he could contribute as Manny did. Manny Ramirez missed some playing time due to suspension, but his contribution to the Dodgers in the 2008 postseason was unforgettable. In the meantime, the Pirates acquired two pitchers and two position players in this three-team trade, but these players didn’t contribute too much to the team.
