Cano’s final season?

A few months ago, I was browsing on a sports card shop online and there were some marketing campaigns. I bought some lucky bags and after opening some packs, I found a Robinson Cano scouting report relic card. Well, the card isn’t that special since Cano violated the PED policy twice.

However, back in the last decade, Cano was probably the best second baseman in the majors.

From 2010 to 2019, Robinson Cano crushed 237 home runs. Despite being suspended for 80 games in 2018, he was still leading in home runs among MLB second basemen. Moreover, Brian Dozier made his MLB debut in 2012 and announced his retirement in February 2021. He only played 7 games in 2020 and didn’t crush a home run. However, he smashed 192 home runs from 2012 to 2019. Furthermore, Ian Kinsler spent 14 years in the majors and he had 257 home runs in his career. Among those 257 home runs, 174 came from 2010 to 2019.

Murphy collected 735 RBI in his career and 639 RBI came from 2010 to 2019. During the same period, Ian Kinsler and Starlin Castro each had 636 RBI.

In the last decade, Robinson Cano had 1695 hits and Starlin Castro is the other second baseman with 1600+ hits. Castro was released by the Nationals last September. Last year, he was suspended 30 games because of violating the MLB domestic violence policy. Additionally, Jose Altuve made it into the big leagues in 2011 and in the last decade, he had 1568 hits. In particular, Altuve had 200+ hits in each season from 2014 to 2017. Furthermore, Ian Kinsler had 1443 hits from 2010 to 2019.

Max Muncy was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 5th round of the 2012 draft. He made it into the big leagues in 2015. However, his OPS was just .660 in 2015 and the next season, his OPS dropped to .565. Muncy didn’t have any plate appearances in the MLB in 2017. But, in 2018, he was called up by the Dodgers and a great journey began. Max had an OPS of .973 in 2018 and in 2019, his OPS was .889. From 2015 to 2019, his OPS was .866. From 2010 to 2019, Cano’s was .855. In the meantime, Altuve’s OPS was .827 in the last decade. As we can see, Robinson Cano led in several categories among MLB second basemen from 2010 to 2019. By far, his career slash line is .301/.351/.488. And, Cano already blasted 335 home runs and collected 1306 RBI. He now has 2639 hits in his career. This season, Cano has been really struggling and he just hits .150/.183/.190. He was released by the Mets in May and then, Cano agreed to a deal with the Padres. The Padres sent him to the Braves for cash in July. In August, The Atlanta Braves designated him for assignment. Well, he will soon turn 40 and it doesn’t seem to be possible for him to reach 3000 career hits. Violating the PED policy really turned his career into a farce.
