A couple of days ago, I watched a postseason game and a pitcher who had pitched well during the regular season did a great job in that game. Over these two seasons, he has been mentioned as a Cy Young favorite several times. After watching the game, I’m just wondering whether he is one of the best pitchers of this decade.
From 2020 to 2022, Julio Urias already made 73 starts and 1 relief appearance. These 3 years, Urias earned 40 wins, leading the majors. He tossed 415.2 innings, posted a 2.66 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP. Additionally, he struck out 406 batters. Furthermore, Urias was outstanding in the 2020 postseason. He made 2 starts and 4 relief appearances in the 2020 postseason, posting a great 1.17 ERA and a 0.65 WHIP over 23 innings. Urias recorded a save with 4 strikeouts in the 2020 World Series Game 6 and helped the Dodgers win the 7th World Series title in franchise history.
In December 2019, Gerrit Cole agreed to a 9-year contract with the Yankees. Over these 3 seasons, Cole, as an ace of the Yankees, made 75 starts and earned 36 wins. Cole posted a 3.28 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP over 455 innings. Also, Cole punched out 594 batters during this period.
In the meantime, Max Fried earned 7 wins in 2020 and didn’t take any losses. Moreover, he earned 14 wins in each of these two seasons. Fried has been extremely important in the Braves rotation. Over these 3 seasons, he owned a 2.68 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP in 407 innings. Furthermore, Fried earned 2 wins for the Braves in the 2021 postseason.
Finally, Framber Valdez and Adam Wainwright each earned 33 wins from 2020 to 2022. Valdez had 5 wins in 2020 and earned 11 wins last season. In 2022, he has a great season with 17 wins, posting a 2.82 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP over 201.1 innings. Meanwhile, it’s very interesting to see veteran Adam Wainwright on the chart. Wainwright had 17 wins last season and he got 11 wins in 2022. From 2020 to 2022, Wainwright made 74 starts and tossed 463.2 innings with a 3.34 ERA. Furthermore, 5 other pitchers each earned 30+ wins from 2020 to 2022.
Win might not be the best stat to precisely describe how good a pitcher is. A pitcher might earn a win even if he doesn't pitch effectively. However, it may be extremely hard to see a pitcher record many wins if he can’t pitch well for a long-term. In the last decade, Max Scherzer got 161 wins and Justin Verlander got 160 wins. Julio Urias got 40 wins these 3 years. Urias is now 26 years old and if he keeps pitching well, it will be possible to see him get 100 wins in this decade. Additionally, Dylan Cease is the other pitcher who is 26 years old. He got 13 wins in 2021 and this season, he earned 14 wins. With a great 2.20 ERA in 2022, he should be the next ace of the Chicago White Sox.
