The 2023 regular season started in late March. By far, there are lots of interesting things happening on the field. I was watching some baseball games with friends. On TV, a player was ready to hit. While seeing that player hitting, I also remember that he was playing in the World Baseball Classic. And, I’m thinking about some players who played in the WBC.
In particular, for those players who hit well in the WBC, do they play well in the regular season?
Nolan Arenado, Mookie Betts and Shohei Ohtani each collected 10 hits in 7 games during the World Baseball Classic. Shohei Ohtani was named the World Baseball Classic MVP. He was hitting .435/.606/.739 with 1 home run and 8 RBI in the tournament. In the 2023 season, Ohtani now hits .300/.382/.533 with 4 homers and 11 RBI in 16 games. Moreover, Arenado slashed .385/.448/.577 with 5 RBI in the WBC. By far, he hits .310/.359/.437 with 2 home runs and 13 RBI in 18 games during the regular season. Meanwhile, Mookie Betts batted .313/.324/.344 with 1 RBI in the WBC. A batting average of .313 doesn’t look bad. However, he only had 1 extra base hit during the tournament. Betts now slashes .266/.390/.453 with 2 homers and 6 RBI in 17 games.
At the same time, Joey Meneses and Yoan Moncada each had 10 hits in 6 games in the WBC. Meneses’ OPS was .963 in the tournament and now he bats .224/.268/.284 in 16 games with the Nationals. Moreover, Moncada had an OPS over 1.000 in the WBC. By far, Moncada played 9 games for the White Sox, slashing .308/.325/.564 with 2 home runs and 5 RBI. Nonetheless, Moncada is currently on the IL.
In addition, Masataka Yoshida inked a 5-year deal with the Red Sox last December. Yoshida played all 7 games for team Japan in the WBC and he was struck out only once. Moreover, he crushed 2 home runs and collected 13 RBI in this tournament. By far, Yoshida slashes .167/.310/.250 with 1 home run and 6 RBI in his first season with the Red Sox.
In the meantime, Trea Turner slashed .391/.440/1.043 with 5 home runs and 11 RBI in 6 WBC games. He was one of the hottest hitters in the tournament. Trea Turner signed an 11-year contract with the Phillies last December. By far this season, he hasn’t smashed any home runs. But, he has 23 hits in 18 games.
Finally, Randy Arozarena played very well for the team Mexico. He batted .450/.607/.900 with 1 homer and 9 RBI in 6 games. Team Mexico lost to Samurai Japan in the semifinal, however, no one will doubt that Randy Arozarena performed well. Arozarena now hits .313/.373/.537 with 4 home runs and 18 RBI in 17 games.
The 2023 World Baseball Classic was surely an exciting tournament and we saw several players hit well during the tournament. In particular, Shohei Ohtani was named the WBC MVP and he doesn’t slow down at the beginning of the regular season. Meanwhile, Randy Arozarena has a great start in the 2023 season as well. But, an interesting thing is that Trea Turner led the tournament with 5 home runs, nonetheless, he hasn’t crushed any homers this season.
