A few weeks ago, I listened to a podcast show, which is one of my favorite podcast shows. In the show, a baseball analyst indicated a trade between the Brewers and the Braves. He mentioned key players’ performances in the show.
After listening to the podcast show, I began to think about the trades between the Brewers and the Braves in recent years. Do they often make trades? Are both teams satisfied with the trades?
To understand a little bit more, I decided to check on the great baseball reference website to review the trades between the Braves and the Brewers since 2020.
After playing 4 games for the Brewers in 2021, Orlando Arcia was traded to the Braves. In the trade, the Brewers acquired 2 pitchers, Patrick Weigel and Chad Sobotka. In 2021, Arcia hit only .091/.091/.091 with 1 RBI in the Brewers uniform. Well, he only played 32 games for the Braves in 2021. However, he was selected to the All-Star game last season. By far this season, Arcia slashes .232/.261/.378 with 6 home runs and 21 RBI in 64 games. Well, Arcia’s OPS is below .700 now. Nonetheless, for the Brewers, things didn’t go well. Patrick Weigel only tossed 4 innings for the Brewers and Sobotka didn’t pitch any games for the Brewers.
In addition, there was a big trade in December 2022.
The Braves, the Brewers and the A’s agreed to a 3-team trade. In the trade, the Braves acquired catcher Sean Murphy. Murphy slashed .251/.365/.478 with 21 home runs and 68 RBI over 108 games in 2023 and was selected to the All-Star game. However, Murphy was just activated from the IL in late May and he has played only 11 games for the Braves so far in 2024. Before the trade, Murphy played 330 games for the A’s, slashing .236/.326/.429 with 46 home runs and 147 RBI.
Meanwhile, the Brewers got catcher William Contreras, pitcher Joel Payamps and pitcher Justin Yeager. William Contreras batted .289/.367/.457 with 17 home runs and 78 RBI over 141 games in 2023. By far this season, he hits .307/.372/.468 with 8 home runs and 46 RBI. Contreras has an OPS over .800 thus far. Before the trade, he played 153 games for the Braves, slashing .260/.338/.471 with 28 home runs and 69 RBI. Moreover, Payamps made 69 relief appearances for the Brewers last season, posting a 2.55 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP over 70.2 innings. So far in 2024, he made 27 relief appearances with a 3.38 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP. The other pitcher Justin Yeager is now in the minors.
Finally, the A’s got 5 players via the 3-team trade. Outfielder Esteury Ruiz led the AL with 67 stolen bases last season. However, his OPS was below .700. By far this season, he’s hitting .200/.270/.382 with 2 home runs and 8 RBI. At the same time, Kyle Muller owns a 3.48 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP over 33.2 innings thus far in 2024. Nonetheless, Muller posted an ERA over 7 over 77 innings in 2023. Manny Pina played only 4 games for the A’s and was released last August. Furthermore, the Phillies just claimed Freddy Tarnok off waivers from the A’s. Royber Salinas is now in the minors.
Looking back at the recent 2 trades that the Braves and the Brewers involved, they each get what they need. Acquiring Orlando Arcia helps the Braves get an everyday shortstop. For the Brewers, acquiring William Contreras seems to be a great decision. He has become one of the best catchers in the majors and this season, he’s one of the great hitters. It will be worthwhile to see whether Contreras will finish the 2024 season with an OPS over .800 again. Additionally, it will be interesting to see if Justin Yeager will make it into the big leagues soon.
