Dangerous when runners in scoring position?

I was watching a game on TV, a batter was intentionally walked and the next batter was at bat. On the screen, it clearly showed that the batter hit well when runners are in scoring position in 2024.

After watching the game, I decided to check on the MLB website to see which batters are excellent when runners are in scoring position.

Bobby Witt Jr. is a strong candidate for the AL MVP award. So far this season, he slashes .351/.400/.620 with 25 home runs and 90 RBI. In particular, he’s very dangerous when runners are in scoring position. To date, his batting average is over .390 when runners in scoring position, and he has collected 60+ RBI.

Meanwhile, another player from the Royals likes to hit when runners are in scoring position. Vinnie Pasquantino has a batting average over .360 when runners are in scoring position. He has crushed 6 home runs and collected 73 RBI. And his OPS is over .900. But when bases are empty, his batting average is below .200.

At the same time, Salvador Perez, who’s playing for the Royals as well, has a batting average over .360 when his teammates are in scoring position and already blasted 7 home runs. Salvador Perez now hits .279/.338/.474 with 22 home runs and 81 RBI over 120 games.

In addition, Yainer Diaz shows that he’s hitting well while runners in scoring position. To date, when runners are in scoring position, he has a batting average over .360 with 6 home runs and 61 RBI. Furthermore, Luis Arraez is a good contact hitter and his batting average is over .300 so far this season. When runners are in scoring position, he makes contact as well. Arraez now hits .357/.382/.405 when runners in scoring position. Nevertheless, he hasn’t crushed any home runs while runners in scoring position. Also, 3 other players each have a batting average over .350 when runners are in scoring position.

In the meantime, let’s take a look at some players who do huge damage when runners are in scoring position. Willy Adames smashed 22 home runs so far this season and 13 of those home runs were hit when runners were in scoring position. He truly hits the ball hard when runners are in scoring position. Well, the Oakland A’s have a disappointing season again. However, Brent Rooker is a player that is worth watching. Rooker already blasted 29 home runs in 2024 and 12 of those home runs were hit when runners were in scoring position. And, don’t forget 2-time NL MVP Bryce Harper, who already crushed 11 home runs when his teammates were in scoring position.

In baseball, to win a game, a team has to score more runs than its opponent. It’s simple. When runners are in scoring position, it creates opportunities for a team to score runs. Hence, it’s better to collect more hits when runners are in scoring position. Looking at those players who hit well when runners are in scoring position, they certainly contribute a lot to the teams and help their teams score more runs. In the remainder of the season, it will be very interesting to see if they will continue doing damage when runners are in scoring position. Additionally, some of them will probably help a team score important runs to clinch a postseason berth.
