Like to pitch in a new uniform?

A week ago, we reviewed some batters who were traded before the trade deadline to see if they have played well after joining a new team. Now, let’s turn our focus on the mound.

It’s been 4 weeks after the trade deadline and several pitchers have pitched some innings for their new teams. So, let’s take a look to see whether they already made instant impacts after being traded.

Firstly, let’s take a look at the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers acquired Jack Flaherty from the Tigers to enhance the rotation. Flaherty made 18 starts for the Tigers this season, posting a 2.95 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP over 106.2 innings. After being traded to the Dodgers, he now has a 3.49 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP over 28.1 innings. Moreover, the team got Michael Kopech from the White Sox. Kopech made 43 relief appearances for the White Sox this season, posting a 4.74 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP over 43.2 innings. In the Dodgers uniform, Kopech made 12 relief appearances and tossed 12.1 innings. He gave up only 1 run after joining the Dodgers.

At the same time, the Padres were very busy before the trade deadline. The team got Martin Perez to enhance the rotation. Perez pitched for the Pirates, posting a 5.20 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP over 83 innings before the trade. After joining the Padres, he owns a 2.70 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP in 26.2 innings. Moreover, to make the bullpen better, the Padres added Tanner Scott and Bryan Hoeing from the Marlins, additionally, they got Jason Adam from the Rays. Scott was selected to the 2024 All-Star game and owned a 1.18 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP over 45.2 innings with the Marlins. Bryan Hoeing threw 30 innings for the Marlins, posting a 2.70 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP. Jason Adam had been a reliable pitcher in the Rays bullpen, posting a 2.49 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP over 47 innings before the trade. After being traded to the Padres, Scott posts a 2.84 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP over 12.2 innings. Hoeing made 10 relief appearances and now has a 1.20 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP over 15 innings. Jason Adam already made 12 relief appearances and earned 3 wins. He only gave up 1 run in the Padres uniform.

Also in the NL West, the D-backs acquired A.J. Puk from the Marlins. Puk pitched 32 games for the Marlins in 2024 and had an ERA over 4. After joining the D-backs, he now has a 0.69 ERA and a 0.69 WHIP in 13 innings.

In addition, let’s take a look at the NL East. The Phillies are now the leader in the division. They also would like to enhance the bullpen. They acquired Tanner Banks from the White Sox and got Carlos Estevez from the Angels. Banks now posts a 2.84 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP over 12.2 innings. Estevez owns a 2.31 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP after making 11 relief appearances for the Phillies. Before the trade, Banks threw 48 innings for the White Sox with a 4.13 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP. Estevez was the closer for the Angels, collecting 20 saves with a 2.38 ERA and a 0.74 WHIP.

In the meantime, the New York Mets acquired starting pitcher Paul Blackburn from the A’s. Blackburn made 9 starts for the A’s in 2024 and owned a 4.41 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. To date, he made 5 starts for the Mets, posting a 5.18 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP over 24.1 innings. Furthermore, the Mets added Phil Maton, Huascar Brazoban and Ryne Stanek to enhance the bullpen. However, Maton is the only one who has an ERA below 4 after putting on the Mets uniform.

Finally, let’s shift our focus to the NL Central. The Cardinals acquired Erick Fedde from the White Sox. Fedde had been pitching well with the White Sox, posting a 3.11 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP over 121.2 innings. After being traded to the Cardinals, he has a 4.23 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP over 27.2 innings. And the Brewers are now leading the division. They got Frankie Montas from the Reds. Montas had an ERA over 5 with the Reds, but his ERA is now below 4 in the Brewers uniform.

In the National League, several teams had moves to enhance pitching depth before the trade deadline. In the NL West, the Dodgers, the Padres and the D-backs are fighting hard and so far, those trades do make impacts to the teams. Nonetheless, in the NL East, things might not go as smooth as the Mets front office expected. In the NL Central, there were some moves, but the Brewers are still leading the division. Very soon, we are going to the final month of the 2024 season. It will be worth watching if some of those pitchers will play an important role to help the team clinch a postseason berth.
