Second half guy

Three weeks ago, I listened to a podcast show. A researcher indicated that a position player, who didn’t hit well before the All-Star break, would bounce back in the second half of the 2024 season. The researcher emphasized that the player has a rich history in hitting well after the All-Star break.

After listening to the show, I was wondering which players had played well after the All-Star breaks over the last 3 seasons. To understand a little bit more, I chose to check on the statcast website.

To make things a little bit different, I chose to read the stats from August to October over the last 3 seasons. Freddie Freeman is one of the most consistent players in the majors. Over the last 3 seasons, he did hit well in the second half. From August to October (regular season), he owned a batting average over .320 and he had 200+ hits. In particular, he slashed .374/.434/.617 with 4 home runs and 16 RBI last August and he collected 43 hits. Moreover, Freeman was the player of the month for September 2022. Back then, he slashed .337/.473/.512 with 4 home runs and 16 RBI.

Jose Altuve is also a consistent player. He had a batting average over .310 from August to October over the last 3 seasons. In particular, he had a good August in 2023, collecting 40 hits and posting an OPS of .952.

Well, Bo Bichette certainly didn’t have a good start this year. In the first half of the 2024 season, he batted only .222/.275/.321 with 4 home runs and 30 RBI. However, after the All-Star break, it’s worthwhile to see his performance. From 2021 to 2023, Bichette did hit well from August to October with a .310 BA. Back in September 2022, he collected 48 hits in a month and slashed .403/.445/.689 with 7 home runs and 27 RBI. The Blue Jays fans certainly want to see Bichette bounce back after the All-Star break.

Furthermore, Trea Turner, Yandy Diaz and Jeff McNeil each had a batting average over .300 from August to October over the last 3 seasons.

In addition, let’s see which players crushed a lot of home runs from August to October over the last 3 seasons. No one would ignore Aaron Judge’s power. From 2021 to 2023, he crushed 55 home runs from August to October. In particular, he blasted 10 home runs in September 2021 and in September 2022. Meanwhile, Marcus Semien smashed 47 home runs from August to October over the last 3 seasons. In 2021, he blasted 12 home runs in the month of September.

We are coming into the final 2 months of the regular season. For some teams, they truly want to see some players, who didn’t play well in the first half, bounce back. For example, Bo Bichette’s OPS was below .700 before the All-Star break. It will be worth monitoring if he could really bounce back. Nonetheless, Bichette is currently on the IL. Additionally, the Rangers are the defending World Series Champion. It seems that Marcus Semien and Corey Seager both could crush home runs from August to October. The Rangers certainly want them to do that again.
