Not so long ago, we just reviewed players who received votes in the 2017 AL Rookie of the year voting and see how their careers have been. This time, let’s shift our focus on the National League.
The 2017 NL Rookie of the year winner was Cody Bellinger, unanimously. Back in 2017, he was called up in late April and began his career. He played 132 games for the Dodgers in 2017, slashing .267/.352/.581 with 39 home runs and 97 RBI. There are ups and downs in his career. So far in his career, he already blasted 196 home runs and collected 597 RBI. And it’s hard to ignore that Bellinger won the 2019 NL MVP award, hitting .305/.406/.629 with 47 home runs and 115 RBI in 156 games.
Paul DeJong finished second in the 2017 NL Rookie of the year voting. He hit .285/.325/.532 with 25 home runs and 65 RBI over 108 games in 2017. He was an All-Star in 2019 and smashed 30 home runs in that season. This season, he played 102 games for the White Sox and was traded to the Royals. DeJong already blasted 24 home runs thus far in 2024.
In addition, Josh Bell finished third in the voting. He made his MLB debut in 2016, playing 45 games for the Pirates. In 2017, he batted .255/.334/.466 with 26 home runs and 90 RBI over 159 games. He has 19 home runs this season.
Moreover, Rhys Hoskins received 12 voting points and German Marquez got 10 voting points. Hoskins played 50 games for the Phillies in 2017 with 18 home runs and an OPS over 1.000. He plays for the Brewers in 2024 and now has 25 home runs and 78 RBI. Marquez made his MLB debut in 2016, tossing 20.2 innings for the Rockies. Finally, 4 players each received fewer than 10 voting points. Manuel Margot made his MLB debut in 2016, playing 10 games for the Padres. In 2017, he slashed .263/.313/.409 with 13 home runs and 39 RBI in 126 games. This season, he plays for the Twins, slashing .237/.290/.336 with 4 home runs and 31 RBI. Luis Castillo made 15 starts for the Reds, posting a 3.12 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP. He’s now a 3-time All-Star and this season, he owns a 3.64 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP after making 30 starts for the Mariners. Back in 2017, Ian Happ played 115 games for the Cubs, hitting .253/.328/.514 with 24 home runs and 68 RBI. Happ was selected to the mid-summer classic in 2022 and this season, he has 25 home runs thus far.
Looking back at the 2017 NL Rookie of the year voting, 6 of those 9 players have become All-Stars. In particular, 4 of them were playing the mid-summer classic in 2019. Cody Bellinger became an MVP in 2019. However, Luis Castillo might be the most consistent player. He has thrown 1000+ innings with 1000+ strikeouts so far in his career.
