A few weeks ago, I was just checking some stats on the great baseball reference website. While reading Aaron Judge’s stats, I just recalled that he won the 2017 AL Rookie of the Year award. It was unanimous.
It’s hard to ignore Aaron Judge’s performance and his career. Nonetheless, after reading Judge’s stats, I began to think about other players who were also in the rookie of the year voting.
Firstly, Andrew Benintendi finished second in the 2017 AL Rookie of the year voting. He made his MLB debut in 2016, hitting .295/.359/.476 with 2 home runs and 14 RBI in 34 games. In 2017, he played 151 games for the Red Sox, slashing .271/.352/.424 with 20 home runs and 90 RBI. He also had 20 stolen bases. Interestingly, Benintendi played for the Yankees in 2022. He was traded from the Royals to the Yankees, hitting .254/.331/.404 with 2 home runs and 12 RBI in 33 games in pinstripes. He now plays for the White Sox.
In addition, Trey Mancini finished 3rd in the 2017 AL Rookie of the year voting. He made his MLB debut in 2016 as well. In 2016, Mancini batted .357/.400/1.071 with 3 home runs and 5 RBI in 5 games. In 2017, Mancini played 147 games for the Orioles, hitting .293/.338/.488 with 24 home runs and 78 RBI. Mancini hasn’t played any games in the majors in 2024.
Thirdly, Yuli Gurriel and Matt Olson each received 5 voting points in the 2017 AL Rookie of year voting. Yuli Gurriel made his MLB debut in 2016, hitting .262/.292/.385 with 3 home runs and 15 RBI in 36 games. In 2017, Gurriel slashed .299/.332/.486 with 18 home runs and 75 RBI over 139 games. At the same time, Olson played 59 games for the A’s in 2017, hitting .259/.352/.651 with 24 home runs and 45 RBI. Olson made his MLB debut in 2016 but he only batted .095/.321/.143 in 11 games. Olson was traded to the Braves in 2022 and has crushed 26 home runs so far this season. The Braves signed Yuli Gurriel to a minor league contract in April 2024 and he was traded to the Royals in late August. He now plays 9 games for the Royals and has 8 hits.
Finally, Jordan Montgomery received 4 voting points. He made his MLB debut in 2017. He made 29 starts for the Yankees, posting a 3.88 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP over 155.1 innings. Additionally, he threw 144 strikeouts. Montgomery pitches for the D-backs in 2024 and he owns an ERA over 6 so far this season.
Looking at other players who also received votes in the 2017 AL Rookie of the year voting, Andrew Benintendi and Matt Olson are both All-Stars. In particular, Matt Olson was selected to the All-Star game twice and he has blasted 200+ home runs so far in his career. Nevertheless, Trey Mancini hasn’t had any big league appearances in 2024. Without doubt, Aaron Judge’s career is fantastic. He’s not only a rookie of the year winner but also an MVP award winner. But, taking a closer look at other players who were also in the voting, Matt Olson’s performance might be quite impressive. Nonetheless, Benintendi, Mancini, Gurriel and Montgomery each used to play in the World Series.
