Need a starter to eat 150 innings?

Once again, the Dodgers clinched a berth in the postseason. The Dodgers extended their postseason streak to 12 seasons. Without doubt, the Dodgers have regular-season success. But, during the regular season, there’s a huge problem that happened once again.

During the regular season, there were 2 pitchers who threw 100+ innings for the Dodgers. Gavin Stone made 25 starts for the team, posting a 3.53 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP over 140.1 innings. Stone threw 116 strikeouts in 2024. At the same time, Tyler Glasnow, who was the opening day starter for the Dodgers, made 22 starts in 2024. He owned a 3.49 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP over 134 innings. Glasnow led the Dodgers with 168 strikeouts. Nonetheless, neither of them reached 150 innings.

Back in 2023, there were 4 pitchers who threw at least 100 innings for the Dodgers. Clayton Kershaw led the Dodgers with 131.2 innings. He owned a 2.46 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP. Meanwhile, Bobby Miller made 22 starts with a 3.76 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP over 124.1 innings. Additionally, Julio Urias made 21 starts and he posted a 4.60 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP in 117.1 innings. At the same time, Tony Gonsolin made 20 starts with a 4.98 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP over 103 innings. Nevertheless, the Dodgers didn’t have any pitchers that ate at least 150 innings in the 2023 season.

So, when was the last time that we saw Dodgers pitchers throw more than 150 innings in a single season? In 2022, 4 pitchers from the Dodgers threw at least 100 innings. Kershaw tossed 126.1 innings, posting a 2.28 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP. Tony Gonsolin had a fantastic season in 2022. He owned a 2.14 ERA and a 0.87 WHIP over 130.1 innings. He only lost 1 game in 2022. But, they didn’t reach 150 innings in 2022. However, Julio Urias and Tyler Anderson did that. Julio Urias made 31 starts in 2022. He owned a 2.16 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP over 175 innings. Tyler Anderson was selected to the All-Star game in 2022. In that season, he made 28 starts and 2 relief appearances for the Dodgers. He had a 2.57 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP over 178.2 innings.

As we can see, it has been 2 seasons that no pitchers from the Dodgers threw at least 150 innings. Tyler Glasnow and the Dodgers agreed to a contract extension in December 2023. It's clear that the Dodgers would like to enhance the rotation. Well, Glasnow tossed a career-high 134 innings for the Dodgers. He threw a career-high 168 strikeouts. However, he couldn’t reach 150 innings. Gavin Stone had a breakout season and that’s what the Dodgers need. But he didn’t reach 150 innings, either. Now the Dodgers are playing in the playoffs. It’s very interesting to see how long the Dodgers will go this postseason. And during the offseason, it will be worth watching what the front office will do to enhance the rotation. Well, several great pitchers are still under contracts with the Dodgers. But will some of them throw at least 150 innings in 2025?
