The 2024 season is over. It’s an unforgettable season, in particular, for the Dodgers fans. There are a lot of records in the 2024 postseason. For me, a very interesting record is that Max Muncy tied the record for most consecutive times reaching base safely in the postseason. He’s now holding the record with Reggie Jackson, who’s known as Mr. October.
Muncy’s record is the one for a single postseason series. So, he set a single-postseason record. It’s not easy to hit and it’s even harder to play in October. However, Max Muncy was able to make an impact. While seeing Muncy’s performance, I began to think about his stats in the postseason and Reggie Jackson’s stats in the postseason.
Firstly, let’s look at Max Muncy’s career in the postseason thus far. He played 62 games in the postseason so far and collected 44 hits. He slashed .217/.388/.443 with 13 home runs and 34 RBI. Additionally, Muncy already drew 54 walks in the postseason. 54 walks are the 8th most in the postseason of all time. Moreover, he drew 20 walks in the 2020 postseason, which is the 3rd most in a single postseason. In the 2024 postseason, Muncy drew 15 walks.
Now, let’s look at Reggie Jackson’s career in the postseason. He hit .278/.358/.527 with 18 home runs and 48 RBI in 77 games in the playoffs. 48 RBI are the 10th most in the postseason of all time. In particular, he was named the World Series MVP in 1973 and in 1977. In the 1973 Fall Classic, Jackson played for the A’s and slashed .310/.355/.586 with 1 home run and 6 RBI in 7 games. In the 1977 World Series, Jackson was with the Yankees and batted .450/.542/1.250 with 5 home runs and 8 RBI in 6 games. 5 home runs in 6 games, that’s really a lot.
Looking at these 2 players’ stats in the postseason, Max Muncy didn’t play as many games as Reggie Jackson. And looking at the number of hits, home runs and RBI, Reggie Jackson certainly had done a better job than Max Muncy. Nonetheless, they each owned an OPS over .800 in the playoffs. Furthermore, Max Muncy’s on-base percentage is higher than Reggie Jackson’s OBP. A key thing for Max Muncy’s postseason performance is that he can get on base. In particular, there are 3 times that Max Muncy drew more than 10 walks in a single postseason. Reggie Jackson was certainly a great player, nonetheless, there was only one time that he drew at least 10 walks in a single postseason.
Reggie Jackson is a Hall of Famer. He had a great career and had played excellently in the postseason. And he’s known as Mr. October. Max Muncy’s career started with the Athletics, which is the same as Reggie Jackson. Nevertheless, their career trajectories are so different. Muncy’s career numbers during the regular season aren’t as impressive as Reggie Jackson’s numbers. However, there’s not only one way to help your team. Max Muncy showed that getting on base can surely help. This postseason, he matched the postseason record and made a huge impact in the playoffs for the Dodgers, in particular, in the NLCS.
