The 2024 season wasn’t a bad one for the Detroit Tigers. They finished 2nd in the AL Central and clinched a spot in the postseason. They defeated the Astros in the AL Wild Card series. However, they lost to the Guardians in the ALDS. The Tigers fell short in the postseason last year. Nonetheless, they certainly want to make it better in the coming seasons.
During the offseason, the Tigers and Gleyber Torres agreed to a 1-year deal. However, does adding Gleyber Torres in the Tigers lineup seem to be a reasonable decision?
Firstly, let’s look at Gleyber Torres’ performance against the AL Central opponents. So far in his career, Torres does hit well against the White Sox and the Guardians. He has an OPS over .800 against those 2 teams. But in the 2024 season, Torres didn’t hit well again the White Sox with an OPS below .600.
Meanwhile, against the Royals and the Twins, Torres’s OPS is over .700 by far in his career. In particular, Torres enjoyed hitting against the Royals last season. He collected 9 hits with 5 RBI in 7 games. In those 7 games, his OPS was over .800. And his performance against the Twins was great in 2024. Torres played 6 games against the Twins and collected 8 hits. Among those 8 hits, 5 were extra base hits.
In addition, Torres’ OPS at Yankee Stadium was .796 so far in his career. Nonetheless, Comerica Park is a huge ballpark, did Torres hit well at his new home? And the answer is yes. Torres played 15 games at Comerica Park thus far. He slashed .283/.377/.623 with 5 home runs and 7 RBI. Well, the numbers are against the Tigers pitching staff. But it seems that Torres is comfortable hitting at this ballpark.
Finally, let’s take a look at the Tigers lineup last season. Among the Tigers hitters who played 100+ games in 2024, Matt Vierling and Riley Greene were the only 2 players who finished the season with an OPS over .700. Moreover, Matt Vierling blasted 16 home runs and Kerry Carpenter smashed 18 home runs in 87 games. Riley Greene was the only one who crushed 20+ home runs for the Tigers in 2024. Meanwhile, Colt Keith was the player who played second base for the Tigers last season. He slashed .260/.309/.380 with 13 home runs and 61 RBI in 148 games.
When we look at Torres’ numbers in 2024, he slashed .257/.330/.378 with 15 home runs and 63 RBI in 154 games for the Yankees. Those numbers weren’t outstanding but adding him into the Tigers lineup could be beneficial to the team because in the Tigers lineup, there weren’t many players who played 100 games last season and had an OPS over .700. Furthermore, by far in his career, he has shown that he can hit against the AL Central opponents. Nonetheless, Torres’ hard-hit rate dropped from 40.3% to 35.4% and his strikeout rate increased from 14.6% to 20.5%. There are some concerns and it will be worth watching in the 2025 season.
