A few weeks ago, I listened to a podcast show. In the show, the hosts were talking about each team’s general manager and indicated that Brian Cashman is the MLB’s longest-tenured GM.
Also, they mentioned other GM’s tenure. It’s not easy to be a General Manager in the MLB. However, Brian Cashman certainly has done a good job in his career with the Yankees. Otherwise, he won’t be able to stay in the big apple for so long. After listening to the show, I’m just wondering how great he is in his tenure.
To solve my doubts, I decided to check on the great Fangraphs website.
Firstly, let’s look at how many wins the Yankees got during Cashman’s tenure.
Cashman became the general manager of the Yankees in February 1998. By far, under Cashman’s leadership, the Yankees already won 2498 games during the regular season. Very importantly, the Yankees never finished a season with a winning percentage below .500 over the last 27 years. Furthermore, there were 7 times that the Yankees finished the season with 100+ wins. In particular, they got 114 wins in 1998.
The Yankees got 2498 wins from 1998 to 2024 and they are the only team with at least 2400 wins during this period. Meanwhile, the Dodgers won 2399 games. Over the last 27 years, there were only 3 times that the Dodgers had a losing season. And they finished 5 seasons with 100+ wins. In particular, the Dodgers won 111 games in 2022.
In addition, the Braves won 2361 games over the last 27 seasons and they had 6 seasons with 100+ wins. Furthermore, the Cardinals and the Red Sox each got 2300+ wins from 1998 to 2024. The Cardinals had 3 seasons with 100+ wins and the Red Sox won 108 games in 2018.

Finally, let’s take a look at the number of World Series titles. The Yankees won 4 titles with Cashman at the helm. The Yankees won the title in 2009 and from 1998 to 2000, the Yankees won 3 World Series in a row. From 1998 to 2024, the Boston Red Sox won 4 World Series titles as well. However, they didn’t become back-to-back World Series champions as the Yankees did. Additionally, the Giants won 3 World Series during this period. Moreover, the Dodgers, the Cardinals and the Astros each won the Fall Classic 2 times.
