The 2025 season has already begun and all 30 MLB teams have played. For me as a Dodgers fan, a great moment is that the players and coaches received their rings at Dodger stadium. Jack Flaherty, who played a key role in the rotation for the Dodgers last postseason, got his ring when the Tigers visited the Dodgers.
Jack Flaherty made 5 starts for the Dodgers in the 2024 postseason. Among those 5 starts, there were 2 times that he could not eat at least 5 innings. The first one was against the Mets at Citi Field and the other was against the Yankees at Yankee stadium in Game 5 of the World Series. While looking back at his performance last postseason, I began to think about a question.
It might be just random that he had 2 bad games in New York. Nonetheless, are there any pitchers that seriously have problems pitching in New York?
To solve my doubts, I decided to check on the statcast website.
Chris Tillman played 10 seasons for the Orioles. He made his MLB debut in 2009 and the last time that he played in the majors was in 2018. While playing for the Orioles, visiting the Yankee stadium was surely common. In his career, he made 11 starts and 1 relief appearance at Yankee stadium and he had an ERA over 7 at this ballpark. Opponents’ batting average against Tillman was over .360 at this ballpark. From 2015 to 2018, he made 4 starts and 1 relief appearance at Yankee stadium and owned a .363 BAA. Tillman didn’t pitch at Citi Field in his career.
David Price spent 14 seasons in the majors. In his career, he used to play for the Rays, the Tigers, the Blue Jays, the Red Sox and the Dodgers. He was the 2012 AL Cy Young award winner. Without doubt, he was one of the best pitchers in the majors. However, there was something that he didn’t do well in his career. Price made 23 starts at Yankee Stadium (New) in his career, posting an ERA over 5. From 2015 to 2019, the Yankees batters did hit well against him at Yankee Stadium with a batting average over .340. In particular, in 2018, he made 2 starts at this ballpark and gave up 8 home runs. Price didn’t pitch at Citi Field in his career.
In addition, Austin Voth made his MLB debut in 2018. He’s pitching in Japan now. From 2018 to 2024, he tossed 14.2 innings at Citi Field and threw 8 innings at Yankee stadium. Nevertheless, the results weren’t good. He gave up 20 runs and opponents hit over .340 against him at those 2 ballparks.
Moreover, Mat Latos played in the majors from 2009 to 2017. He threw 1000+ innings in his career. From 2015 to 2017, he threw 12 innings at Citi Field and tossed 9.2 innings at Yankee stadium. Nonetheless, his performance wasn’t good. He gave up 18 runs and opponents batted .340 against him at those 2 ballparks. Furthermore, Erick Fedde made his MLB debut in 2017, but he didn’t pitch in the majors in 2023. Last season, he pitched for the White Sox and the Cardinals. By far in his career, pitching in New York isn’t easy. He gave up 8 runs over 10.1 innings at Yankee stadium and allowed 29 runs in 31 innings at Citi Field. In particular, in 2022, he tossed 9.2 innings at Citi Field, giving up 16 runs (all earned). In New York, Fedde has a BAA over .320 thus far. Last season, he made a start at Yankee stadium, giving up 4 runs over 5.1 innings.
Finally, an interesting case is that we see Mark Leiter Jr. on the chart. He was traded to the Yankees last summer. Previously, he used to pitch for the Phillies, the Blue Jays and the Cubs. Leiter Jr. made his MLB debut in 2017. From 2017 to 2024, his BAA at Citi Field was .333. At Yankee Stadium, his BAA was .288. Nonetheless, last season, he gave up 9 runs over 14.2 innings at Yankee stadium and had a .290 BAA.
Looking back at the last 10 seasons, for sure, there are some pitchers who didn’t pitch well in New York. Chris Tillman and David Price aren’t playing now. Nonetheless, it will be worthwhile to monitor some pitchers’ performance in New York in the new season. For example, can Mark Leiter Jr. improve his performance at Yankee stadium in his second season with the Yankees?
