A few weeks ago, I saw a post on Facebook. It was a photo with several players who used to collect 50+ doubles in a single season. There are several great hitters who had 50+ doubles in a single season over the last several seasons. After reading the post, I was just thinking about some questions.
Well, we might know who the home run leaders are. However, we might not be 100% sure which players had collected a lot of doubles. To solve my doubts, I decided to check on the great Fangraphs website.
Firstly, which players are the leaders in doubles of all-time? Hall of Famer Tris Speaker spent 22 seasons in the majors. He’s a member of the 3000-hit club and in his career, he collected 792 doubles, which ranked 1st among all MLB players of all-time.
Well, there are still a lot of debates about whether Pete Rose should be elected to the Hall of Fame. At this moment, the ban is still. Pete Rose had 4256 hits, which is the most of all-time. Among those 4256 hits, 746 were doubles.
In addition, Hall of Famer Stan Musial is a member of the 3000-hit club as well. He spent 22 seasons in the majors and collected 725 doubles. Moreover, Ty Cobb played 24 seasons in the majors and collected 4189 hits. He had 700+ doubles in his career as well.
Furthermore, Albert Pujols retired after the 2022 season. He had 3384 hits in his career and 686 hits were doubles.
Meanwhile, over the last 10 seasons, which players had collected many doubles? Freddie Freeman is one of the most consistent hitters in the majors. From 2015 to 2024, he had 372 doubles. In particular, he had 59 doubles in 2023. Also, he had 40+ doubles in 2016, 2018 and 2022. At the same time, Mookie Betts had 359 doubles over the last 10 seasons. There were 7 times that Betts collected 40+ doubles in a single season from 2015 to 2024. In the meantime, Jose Ramirez had 350+ doubles over the last 10 seasons as well. He led the majors with 56 doubles in 2017. Additionally, he had 40+ doubles in 2016 and in 2022. And Nick Castellanos had 341 doubles over the last 10 seasons. Castellanos collected 58 doubles in 2019.
Looking at the leaders in doubles, without doubt, we see several household names. Among those 4 players who had 700+ doubles in their careers, only Pete Rose isn’t in the Hall of Fame. Albert Pujols had 686 doubles in his career and he will become a Hall of Famer soon. Over the last 10 seasons, Freeman consistently hit a lot of doubles and his teammate, Mookie Betts did the same as well. At the same time, we can’t ignore Jose Ramirez’s contribution. So far this season, Jung Hoo Lee leads the majors with 10 doubles. It’s just the first month of the 2025 season, we can keep watching to see whether there will be some players to finish the season with at least 50 doubles.
