In the 2024 NL Rookie of the year voting, Paul Skenes received 136 voting points and won the award. Meanwhile, Jackson Merrill got 104 voting points and Jackson Chourio received 26 voting points. At the same time, Shota Imanaga had 4 points.
Without doubt, Paul Skenes had a good start in his career. However, looking at the result, Jackson Merrill got 100+ points and Jackson Chourio had 26 points. The 2 Jacksons began their careers last season and they actually did play well in their rookie seasons.
As they are going to the sophomore season in their careers, let’s see whether things are different.
Firstly, let’s look back at the first season of their careers. Jackson Merrill slashed .292/.326/.500 with 24 home runs and 90 RBI in 156 games. In 2024, Merrill finished the season with 20+ home runs and 90 RBI. That looks pretty good. Additionally, he had 16 steals and owned an OPS over .800. No one would ignore Merrill’s future. He did play pretty well at age 21.
In the meantime, Chourio hit .275/.327/.464 with 21 home runs and 79 RBI over 148 games in 2024. Chourio had 22 stolen bases last season and his OPS was very close to .800. At age 20, Chourio finished the season with 20+ home runs and 20+ steals.
As we can clearly see, Merrill did hit better than Chourio in the 2024 season. However, Chourio ran a little bit more and owned a higher on-base percentage.
In addition, the 2025 season just began a few weeks ago. Well, good news for Jackson Merrill, he and the Padres agreed to a contract extension. However, he’s currently on the IL. By far this season, Merrill already played 10 games for the Padres, hitting .378/.415/.676 with 3 home runs and 10 RBI. In the meantime, Chourio now bats .260/.278/.500 with 5 home runs and 20 RBI over 24 games. Chourio has stolen 2 bases.
So, the 2 Jacksons already showed that they could blast 20+ home runs in a single season. Merrill can collect 90 RBI in a single season. Chourio’s speed is good and he can steal 20+ bases in a single season. In 2025, they are in their sophomore season. There are several key things worth watching. Firstly, will they finish the 2025 season with at least 30 home runs? Secondly, is it possible to see Merrill collect 100 RBI in 2025? Nonetheless, we have to wait to see when Merrill will be back from the IL. Additionally, is Chourio going to steal 30+ bases in 2025?
